Today’s post will be all about managing stress. I think many of us underestimate how stress can impact every aspect of our lives, and how serious it can really get. I’ve been told that stress accounts for more than 80% of doctor visits. Stress impacts your digestion, your heart health, the way your muscles and bones feel, your mind, and seriously just about everything else. Managing stress is therefore an integral part of living a healthy life. So, here are the steps on how to manage stress based on my experience:
Embrace Your Inner Child
When I’m stressed and need a break from my adult life, I’ll watch a cartoon or a Disney movie. It gives my mind the mental break it needs from the real world, and it gives me an excuse to laugh. If you have kids, go and play with them! Take them to the park or stay inside and play house or cops ‘n robbers. There is nothing wrong with having the heart of a child or taking time to act silly.
Breaks are super important for you because, well, they’re breaks! Schedule a 5 or 10 minute break from your work and do something else entirely. And by “something else,” I do not mean anything work or chore related. I’m talking about going for a quick walk, checking Facebook, or even catching up on a show one segment at a time like I do. You’ll come back to your work feeling refreshed and ready to continue.
Do/Find Something You Love Doing
I truly believe that we all should have something we enjoy doing. For me, it’s reading and spending time with my husband. Whatever it is, make sure you make and take time to do it. Please don’t give up on your passion because you’re too busy. Use your breaks or the time that you’re not working to do something you love.
Set a Time Limit
Everyday, I set a time when I will be completely done with working. This is so important if you want to have a work/life balance and not drive yourself crazy. It also helps you focus a bit more on getting your work done in a timely manner. In addition, it allows your loved ones to give you space (hopefully) and know that you will be preoccupied until the designated time.
Listen to Your Body
Boy, have I been guilty of not doing this! Our bodies tell us when it’s time to shut it down and take a break. For me, I start feeling achy and weak, and may even get a headache. And if I don’t listen, my body forces me to. I would get a bad cold or a fever and be forced to rest. What good am I then? So, please try to listen to when your body is telling you to rest. Get your rest and get your sleep. You will be so much more efficient at your work. Trust me.
That’s it for now! I hope these steps work for you as they do for me. Be better and be healthy!
